My name is Matheus, and I tell stories.
I was born in Brazil and moved to the US at an early age. The first part of my life was spent going to school in the US and visiting my family in Brazil during school breaks. Growing up in a bicultural setting, I learned that cultures can share common basic structure, but differ in refinement and details.
In these formative years, I developed my interest in visual storytelling with comics, video games, and animation. I made comics, doodled incessantly in my schoolbooks, and dreamed of becoming a video game designer. But in my teenage years another interest developed: History. I decided to pursue a University degree in History because of my insatiable curiosity about humanity's origins and journey to the present. I learned of the power of narrative in determining one's outlook on life.
After University, I found myself at a crossroads. I knew where I had come from, but I didn't know where I was going. I found myself teaching English, an unexpected turn of events. I honed my storytelling skills as a language teacher.
After years of language teaching and founding my own language school, I was ready for a change. While I had learned to enjoy it, it never felt like my true calling. It was teaching English to Brazilian designers that reignited a spark in me. The more I spoke to them about their profession in our weekly classes, the more I saw myself doing it. I finally decided to pursue graphic design, which marries my lifelong passion for visuals with my life-learned skills in communication to bring stories to life. Maybe we will write the next chapter of this story together.
